    Reader comments on Enduring Love

    Subject: Differences

McEwans's novel "Enduring Love" is beautiful, very descriptive and well-written. I have enjoyed a lot reading it and trying to penetrate in the depths of the characters' minds.
The film based in this novel is also exciting and interesting. The scenes have a strong impact and the actors are excellent. The differences between the book and the film are striking. For example, in the book Clarissa (called Claire in the film) is a teacher of Romantic Poetry, but in the film, she is a sculptress. This allows the viewer to actually see how she expresses herself in her work. At the beginning, she is unable to make a sculpture of Joe because of her feelings towards him as a lover. When finally she makes the sculpture, we see how her feelings have changed.
Another important difference is the ending. In the book, when Parry has a knife and threatens to kill himself, he is actually using emotional blackmail to convince Joe to forgive him. On the other hand, when Parry threatens and wounds Claire,it is in order to get rid of an obstacle. He wants a relationship whith Joe. Perhaps the director wanted a hot film.
