After a 2nd viewing on DVD, I noticed that the coffee cup in Diane's apartment looks exactly like the ones that are used at Winkies diner.
Does this mean she might have worked there?
Or was she just a theiving patron?
From what I can remember the only person we see smoking is Adam. What's with all the ashtrays?
I would also like to mention that the bumbling
hitman told Diane that once she gives him the money the deal is done. The idea that he could have just taken the money and left the key later to make her think the deal was done, seems much more fitting for this character.
The original Camilla who auditioned for the lead role is wearing pearl earings at the party. Any signifigance?
Anyone notice that Diane sips expresso at the party just before she gives the mob guy a look?
I thought Adam directed the Silvia North Story...
at the party someone says that it was diected by Bob Brooker.
Just a few irrevelant observations.

6) Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
We are able to gauge proper chronology by the absence and presence of these items during the final scenes in Dianeās apartment. Her neighbor awakens her; she puts on a robe; her neighbor takes the piano-shaped ashtray; Diane makes coffee and walks toward the couch; whoa, Camillaās lying there topless! Dianeās no longer wearing the robe (or a top herself for that matter) and the coffee table again has the piano ashtray on it. The coffee cup is gone too. Diane is flashbacking. Later, itās night and Diane is sitting on the couch, back in her robe with the coffee cup on the table. It looks like sheās been there all day, remembering, lamenting, perhaps hallucinating. Two micro-people are about to crawl under her door.
7) What is felt, realized and gathered at the club Silencio?
Felt: profound sadness; fear.
Realized: this is all an illusion/recording/dream÷things are not what they seem to be.
Gathered: a blue box that is the obvious counterpart of the blue key.
Most interpretations Iāve read speculate that the club itself symbolizes death (or being dead) and the emcee Satan. Iād have to say these speculations are probably pretty much on the money. With this scene, the movie takes a sharp, sudden turn into the overtly symbolic, although this is really only clear in retrospect or upon subsequent viewing. There is no warning or signal that literal interpretations will suddenly no longer apply÷the ćdreamä up to this point, though itās had its odd moments, has at least adhered to some semblance of plausible reality. I believe the jarring turn is intentional. Lynch himself interjects, invades our (the viewerās) dream; ćThis is all illusion,ä he says. ćNothing youāve seen up to this point is real. Youāve been duped. Wake up. Betty is not real and neither is Rita. They are fictional characters invented by Diane. By the way, this is what death is like (a theatre?), and this is what hell is like too, and Iām Satan, and Diane, you ought to feel guilty about having Camilla killed. She is dead you know÷thatās why she chants ĪSilencioā in bed after your hot lesbian sex. Also, youāre probably dead too. After all, somewhere along the way thereās a shot of you as a corpse in your bed, and if viewers havenāt turned off the movie in frustration by now, theyāll see you shoot yourself later. In any case, they will speculate obsessively for the rest of their lives because Iām a lunatic on acid who also happens to make films.ä
8) Did talent alone help Camilla?
The presence of nefarious Mafiosos with inexplicable ties to the movie industry is an odd detail to include in a story ostensibly about a jealous, jilted lover coming unglued in her own trippy dreamscape. Some have suggested that this element of the movie is Lynchās personal indictment of the unscrupulous Hollywood power hierarchy and its devious machinations. Itās also not completely inconsistent to say the Mafiosos are simply an invention of Dianeās jealous mind, a manifestation of her resentment over Camillaās success. Both interpretations work, even simultaneously, though neither explains why Lynch would include this as one of the ćTen Clues To Unlocking The Mysteryä of this film.
9) Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkies.
The man behind Winkies is one of the movieās purely symbolic characters (the other is perhaps The Cowboy, though I have specifically avoided the incomprehensible can of worms surrounding that character and his meaning). So the question is: WHAT does he symbolize? I can only relate my personal and undoubtedly highly subjective view: I believe he (the credits reveal that this character is played by a woman, by the way) is a representation of the vile, black ugliness welling up from your chest and into your throat that results from being cruelly or callously rejected. Anyone whoās ever had an unrequited crush, a love-obsession, a messy breakup or been on the receiving end of an unceremonious dumping will be familiar with this feeling. Love can be dreadfully ugly and can provoke irrational, inexplicable, shocking actions in otherwise perfectly sane, happy, balanced individuals. I believe the man behind Winkieās is meant to represent that ugliness.
Letās go ahead and note the occurrences surrounding him÷if memory serves, there are three: 1) The Scene With The Two Men Inside Winkieās. Man 1: ćI can see him (the dumpster guy) through the wall. Heās the one whoās doing it.ä Conclusion: See? Everything I said above is totally accurate. 2) Dumpster guy is looking at the Blue Box, puts it down, two micro-people crawl out. Conclusion: Huh? I mean . . . yeah, see? Still totally accurate. Ahem. 3) Dumpster guy appears on the screen in a montage following Diane shooting herself in the head. Conclusion: Isnāt there an Adam Sandler movie on TNT I could be watching about now?
