Let's keep the name-calling off of offoffoff please. I've met just as many know-nothing, beer-swilling, car-loving, meat-eating, war-supporting, voting, blogging, misogynistic jerkoff rednecks in phoenix chicago balitmore new york and boston (and Europe too, for that matter) as I have in louisville nashville or atlanta. It's not a locally specific issue, this "hillbillyness".
But also, it's true that the parallels between Algiers and Iraq or Vietnam are uncanny. Guerilla warfare pervades each of these major military operations, and ultimately provides the opposition with the capability to supplant the idea that the occupying force is welcome or needed there. It is only a matter of time (1-2years) before this is realized in Iraq.

Re: Your review of 'Battle of Algiers'
Dear Iraq Veteran,
Obviously you also know nothing about the war in Algeria, nor the war in Iraq (or else perhaps you would have shared some of your intellect with us?). In fact, you were a small, clueless gear in the motor of a large, clumsy war effort in Iraq. You saw the conflict not for what it was, but through the limited, hillbilly redneck perspective of your Kentucky upbringing (or whatever goofball part of your country you come from).
Please, if I'm wrong - I'd love to hear back from you. I'm dying for a fresh new "absolute truth" about the situation in Iraq.
I will have to see "the Battle for Algiers" in its entirety after reading Tanzer's great review.
