David Lynch's 10 Clues redux [10]
10) Where is Aunt Ruth?
Betty (to Rita): ãSheâs letting me stay here while sheâs working on a movie thatâs being made in Canada . . . but I guess you already know that.ä
[Later, Aunt Ruth looks in the bedroom as if to explore a strange noise after Betty, then Rita disappear following their return from Club Silencio with the Blue Box. So Aunt Ruth was really there all along and the whole thing up to that point was Dianeâs dream.]
Diane: ãWhen my aunt died, she left me some money. She worked here.ä
Coco: ãIn the movies?ä
Diane: ãYes.ä
[So Aunt Ruth is dead. Itâs all perfectly sensible, no?]

I absolutely hated Mulholland Drive upon first viewing. Weird for the sake of weird is neither brilliant nor artistic, but rather is usually an attempt to disguise something half-baked as both. My ranting against Lynch and his annoying weirdness was short lived, however, and I soon found that I simply could not stop thinking about the film. Iâve read the arguments of those who contend MD is purely visceral, like listening to music, and that one ought not attempt to regard it in any other fashion. Iâm not altogether sure those people are wrong. However, after much excruciating analysis (some of it my own, some stolen from others), I contend there is, in fact, a logical, even linear story present in the film. I further contend that anyone whoâs been hurt by a lover (or been the unfortunate bearer of unrequited love) can relate to it, and would undoubtedly agree the theme could not have been conveyed as effectively outside the surreal dreamscape in which most of MD takes place. A linear movie rooted in wide-awake, literal reality would not have done justice to the intensity of the associated feelings. Furthermore, I think it is a testament to Lynchâs brilliance (thatâs right, I said brilliance) that he could at the same time make his little anti-Hollywood statements about the trials faced by filmmakers and the devastation frequently suffered by na•ve, aspiring actresses. At any rate, this movie has now officially taken a full 4 months out of my life (note the date of my first posting÷no, wait, on second thought, donât), and it is my sincere hope that with this study Iâve finally purged my need to ever think or speak about it again as long as I live.
