    Reader comments on High Tension

    Subject: Solid entertainment - SPOILER
    Date: Nov 16, 2006
    Sender: finnPrevious | Next

I just saw the film on the Film4 channel in the UK. I can see where most of the previous comments - positive and negative - are getting. Well, it doesn't pretend to be a great piece of art, but it's solid quality. Neither does if have a complex plot, but I personally have the problem with complex plots in films that I end up not knowing who's the good guy and who's the bad guy or what is really going on. English spy movies can be impossible to understand. This is not an Agatha Christie movie where you can fit together a 100% logical plot, and for the simple reason that the film is telling the story as the sick Marie thinks it is. The reality of the film is that Marie really thinks the film is what happened. As we find out in the end that the "killer" is only Marie's imagination, our first reaction is to try to refit that fact logically into the story - which is impossible - because we want to know what really happened. The point is that the film doesn't tell us exactly what really happened. We know they ended up in the forest but not which car they actually drove in. We don't know if the accident really took place. As the story is told by a sick person, there is no point analysing it from a logic angle. Doing so simply shows that one has not understood the film. As some previous commenters tried to do it simply shows that the film is not so trivial as some would have it. A last comment about homophobia. I'd say that only someone who's already a homophobe would call the film homophobic. There are countless films where a more or less insane man is chasing a woman. It adds to the surprise that it's for once not a man chasing a woman. I'm all for gay rights and equal treatment, but why do some now complain that gays cannot be treated the same way as heterosexuals in movies but need special considerations? Are they also crying "heterophobe" every time a heterosexual is the sick character? They wanted equal treatment and they got it - and they still complain.
