Subject: This movie has been done before!

Has anyone seen "Jacob's Ladder" with Tim Robbins? Although Lynch has grabbed the audience once again with non-chronological filmmaking and oddly-placed characters, we've seen this type of filmmaking before and after ("The Sixth Sense").

Death from the start
I believe that the entire movie is what 'plays' in Diane/Betty's head as she is dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It all takes place in the time between the shot (we see her falling toward the bed) and death. The opening early scenes show the jitterbug contest that gave her the ambition to go to Hollywood...and then we are introduced to Diane/Betty's version of the confident but unsophisticated woman she once believed herself to be. The strange, rude and threatening money men who are influencing the director away from her seem to me to be more godlike than mafiosos (in the sense that Zeus is godlike, for instance...messing about just for fun in the lives of mortals. Diane/Betty creates in her dying moments an explanation for her failure in Hollywood...it was evil little men, not her own lack of talent. Further reality...yes, she does hire a hitman to kill Rita/Camilla ; a hitman who is presented as being ludicrously inept, but does get the job done eventually.
It certainly was not only Rita/Camilla's engagement that drove Betty/Diane to want her dead - she is sick with grief when she hears the news (although I believe her reluctance to go to the party shows she suspected beforehand that it wouldn't be a treat for her in any way. Then...she sees that not only does Rita/Camilla have a male lover, she has a female replacement for Betty/Diane as well.
Okay, I am tired of writing about this, but have many further thoughts if anyone wants to chat about it...email me!
