Reader comments on The Syrian Bride

    Subject: multi layered movie

This was a lovely movie that was deceptively simple in its complexity and was mutli-layered from the microcosm to macrocosm.

So many issues and layers and yet the director was able to sew it all together seamlessly. I did find that the back and forth complications at the end with Israel's and Syria's passport control at the golan was representative of current politics (or the politics that have been going on forever). And the way it ends is fitting in that aspect, also.

The strength in the movie was that the storyline crossed cultures. There were times in the family's personal story that I forgot they were Druze (with Syrian loyalty) and thus stateless, living in israel and a daughter was being married off in an arranged marriage. The family dealt with many issues & dysfuctions that could be brought upon any family no matter what race or religion. That was what was so beautiful sensitive about this film.
