Very informative documentory, yet it does not cover all the major well known wineries of the world but few selected ones. I liked the political aspects of wine making business and the social catipal (class) attached to it.
I agree with the Languedoc wine making spirit and culture in rejecting the Mondavi seemingly benign business outreach. Why can't the Mondavi stick with their soil and California sunshine to make their wines and improve them? Why do they have to reach out and make deals with others? Isn't because their "family" compagny is traded in the stock market? It is no wonder why some people see them as greedy and going after making money only. You do not see a European wine makers coming to California to make deals, or coming to Ontario Canada to make ice wine in joint venture Right??? Why is this?
I know the saying: "the entrepreneurial spirit of the Americans is without a match". That's bull. It is the all pervasive market oriented non-stop threadmill that will attempt to make wine by all means necessary to appease the stock holders. I felt sorry for the Mondavi and that famous French wine consultant when they say that wine will be made in the moon in the future. What a self-congradutalory and sorry claim. It proves one again that wine making as a market is prevalent.
The Sardinian wine maker summed it up well in the end. He is not in business of making money he is in business to make wine in order to drink it with a good meal. If it sales ok, if not God bless. The lucky are the ones who stumble on his fine wine when they visit his region. For Walker this wine does not exits, therefore it cannot be good. Sad situation indeed.
