    Reader comments on The Intruder

Subject: L'intrus/The Intruder, film by Claire Denis
    Date: Aug 17, 2006

I like films that make me think and ask questions. I also like films that tell a rich story, for after all, doesn't any form of art wish to tell some sort of story and create a connection between the art and the beholder? After thinking about and questioning the film "L'intrus," I made no revelations and arrived at no answers. And if Claire Denis wished to tell a story, in my opinion, she failed utterly. I cared about none of the characters because none of the characters were developed. Any action or event that took place on screen had no emotional impact on me because no meaning was given for anything that happened. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but I still like a story teller to create interesting characters and to tell a story--in whatever creative way he or she chooses--but indeed to tell a story, even if its meaning or ending is somewhat inconclusive. If Ms. Denis' point was to offer up confusion and disjointed images as some sort of avant-garde film-insider joke, then "L'intrus" was an expensive, pointless, mean-spirited effort. If, on the other hand, Ms. Denis did indeed have a story to tell that had some sort of purpose and meaning, the story, purpose, and meaning never made the artistic leap from her mind to the big screen. What a waste of time for everyone concerned!
