Reader comments on The Door in the Floor

    Subject: Re: the ending
    Date: Jul 27, 2006

    My take on the ending-

Short Answer: The door in the floor is like Adam and Eve eating from the fruit of knowledge. In the squash court, Bridges was safe and in fact "king of the island," outside the court- he was vulnerable.

    Long Answer:

In the childhood story that Bridges narrated, the little boy is told to never open the door in the floor by his overly protective mother. At the end of movie, Basinger - whose character is names Marion (am I reaching to say that this a bible reference to Mary the Virgin Mother) has left the family. Bridges' character, a boy that never really grew up, is then forced to grow-up himself and raise Ruth as a single parent. To give him the extra nudge into adulthood and responsibility, Bridges even sighs with an ache after he finishes playing squash, possibly indicating that he has overstayed his time in the womb/squash court-security blanket and needs to face the world as it is.

How did I do? Am I off base? In the ballpark? Do I get an attaboy? Anyone know what the name significance of Bridges character Ted Cole (if any?).

    Re: the ending

This post is a bit late, but I just watched the movie. I think the ending has something to do with not being afraid of what might be inside the door in the floor. Once you find out that knowing life can be much more scary than what is unknown, then you may find yourself retreating into the 'door in the floor'.
