Subject: Don McKellar Scores an Insightful Hit
    Date: Oct 17, 2000
    Sender: Steven SchreckPrevious | Next

In "Last Night" writer, director, star Don McKellar shows us what, conceivably, no American film maker is capable of showing; a movie in which the end of the world is a given (something American directors would presumable find inconceivable; they would have to give it substance so that "we" could analyze and overcome it) and, in fact, is going to happen six hours from the point in which the movie begins. Although violence is not absent, it is mostly confined to sporadic acts on the streets and is not the central focus of the movie. Instead we are confronted with a fair assortment of characters, mostly connected to one another (although often unknowingly) and how the individualized philosophies and personas of each has led them to the course they have chosen for the last fateful hours.

"The world will end with everyone vaporized at midnight in a nightless world (as though our world were at the galactic core where the stars are so concentrated that night cannot be); what do you do with the rest of your life?" to paraphrase an oft repeated joke line from "Heathers".
