Subject: YOU are the morons!
Date: May 28, 2006
I found the following comment posted here to be typical of those who just don't get it:
"He was a delusional nut bar who was a phony from the word go. If he was true to his so called beliefs he would have reached over and covered himself with ketsup when being eated rather than crying for help from his girlfriend. I find it laughable when things like this happen to those self appointed, self rightous, tree hugging, tofu eating, self serving so called environmentalist and most of you who live in the city and the closest thing to a bear you've seen is winnie the pooh. Timmy Dexter died as he lived uselessly, alone and crying, I feel sorry for the two bears that selfish bastard took with him."
The truth is, Timothy Treadwell did indeed "beat" all his critics (as he proclaimed on video in his own classic, animated fashion). Regardless of whether or not he was crazy or nutty, he achieved something far more lasting, important and fulfilling than me or any of you bunch of loser armchair quarterbacks ever will. He did so by setting out as a pioneer in uncharted territory. There are no more continents to discover, and little opportunity for 21st century man to live on the edge and break rules; most of us slog along a boring, pre-defined, pre-determined lifestyle which must conform to the collective guidelines of society, and the idiotic judgments of individuals (like you).
Timothy Treadwell broke free of all that, with a flair. He left behind the prison we call daily life (going to work M-F, 9-5) in search of a thrill most of us will only fantasize about. We all have our own fantasies, but rarely pursue them. "BRAVO" to Timothy Treadwell for showing us it is still possible to be a pioneer. And, he did it without harming his fellow man or environment.
I walked away from Herzog's film not in judgment of Timothy Treadwell's mental health - which was irrelevant (many of the most famous and influential people in the history of mankind have also been proclaimed to be crazy or nutty). What I walked away with was (1) a keen new interest in Alaskan Brown Bears, and (2) a sadness that I will never see Treadwell in future productions - for I thought he had a great and humorous film presence. As for Herzog, he could have made a more effective film by reducing some of his own apparent judgment. A good artist shouldn't profit from criticizing another artist.
