After my initial impression of yet another mediocre porn disguised as arthouse cinema, five minutes into the film proved 9 Songs difficult to pigeon hole. Two kiddies, fucking, fucking and well, more fucking. Yawn. Contemporary film and television features so much fucking that no one bats an eyelid any more, its not deemed controversial (quite the opposite in fact, those who oppose sex in media forms are usually ostracised a prudish and non-liberal, God forbid). And despite the overwhelming criticism upon its release, I actually liked the film, the characters, the bands/music, the milieu of the boyfriend's cosy flat and their ventures outdoors. The shagging scenes were passionate without becoming trite (ie some cheesy Damien Rice/James Blunt song about love in the background and contrived orgasmic facial expressions by the female protagonist before the bloke interest has even touched her etc) and represented the intimate scenes between a contemporary couple in love, which is usually very sexually charged (at the beginning anyways). She is a cute American, quirky, not intensely beautiful, he a dark, quiet ugly/handsome Brit.

Winterbottom presents the awkwardness and beauty of sex between two people with chemistry who, unlike the mainstream film recipe suggests, will not spend the rest of their lives together smiling happily and riding off into the sunset. He captures the ephemerality of love and relationships. Of course the close up of cock and pussy shots are not completely necessary to encapsulate this, but what the hell right? It's fucking arthouse.
