    Reader comments on Machuca

I was among the more than 100 students who graduated in 1974 from Saint George«s College in Santiago, Chile, 1 year after the military had been asked by an overwhelming majority of chilean citizens to take over power from Allende«s bloody and communist hands. In 2004 the «74 Class gathered at the school«s facilities to celebrate our 30 years "off" Saint George«s. When Father J. D. asked how our Allende experience lived at St. George«s,(the "Machuca" years)had left marks on us, I could tell him to look at statistics: of the 100 fellows gathered there on that sunny november evening, no more than 6 or 7 had chosen Saint George as the school where to raise their offspring. We would simply not let our children being educated = misled actually, by the same so called Holy Cross Chilean Branch Congregation that so deliberately had fostered hatred and spread confusion among their students 30 years back. (I can say that the Holy Cross Congregation is quite prestigious in the U.S. and full with righteous priests. Notwithstanding, it is hard for my generation to forgive them having sent down to Chile so spoiled and reddish members that tore the long-lasting Georgian family into pieces, and ended with one of the far leading educational institutions in the country. As to me, I have forgiven them long ago...although it remains a duty not to forget, as it is also a duty not to keep silent, for this tiny piece of history not to be wrongly written.) Fortunately, after so many years, we can now find healthy-spirited catholic schools we can rely upon in Santiago. Back to the Machuca film. At the time the Machuca Director Mr. Andrˇs Wood«s story is supposed to happen, Mr. Wood was only a little innocent Georgian boy, while I stood as a grown-up, wide-oppened eyed and no stupid teenager. Boy Wood has nothing he could possibly teach me about those days. His Hollywood film is just old fashioned sovietlike propaganda. The "Cartoon Network" is considering buying it for the coming season.(I have just realized that "Hollywood film" may be deconstructed into "Holy Cross - Andrˇs Wood film", what a funny coincidence...at least for me). By the way, I was missing to tell that I haven«t seen the Machuca film, nor I expect to see it in the near or even remote future. I wouldn«t give a penny (literally) for Mr. Wood«s thoughts... Thank you for reading my belated comments. Good bye.

    Response to this comment:
    Machuca

I believe that the film, as well as being an incredible document of the occurrences of the period in which it is set, is also a rare film in the sense that it has several "threads" interwoven within it that tell of the socio-economic differences that created at that time antagonistic postures between the classes (which had not occurred previously despite the inequality of incomes); the personalized tensions shown in the living conditions belonging to each of the two boys and their then unusual friendship and the political idealogies that led to hatred, an almost unkown characteristic in the Chilean people before this time.
