I saw this film when it first came out in China. the version was an all mandarin version which seemed to explain the story much better. fellow asian viewers also complained that the story was hard to get, too abstract for some. the prequel to this "In the mood for love." was better received by asia.
I, however, like this one for the univerality of the theme where as "In the mood..." might be to slow and coy for western audiences.
the central message is the passage of time and how it interacts with emotional feelings, specially about love. the futuristic train that Chow talks about is how time distorts us. this is why whenever it passes areas 1224 to 1225, it's especiall cold. those are the days when warmth and tenderness of love are most missed by the lonely.
as for the fractured stories of Chow's loves, they're rather like episodes that one goes through it his/her own journey. in the end, the catharsis might be that it's not about being wanting, not about being wasteful and nonchalant, not about receiving, but about joy from another's happiness. The story ends with Faye Wong's character finding happiness, not Chow. and that someone has find love is supreme and grander than the selfish needs of one. and love, in the end, is about giving without expecting to receive anything for return.
